How to make iPhone videos sparkle with iMovie

Filed under: Video , How-tos , iPhone , iPhone 101 If you read my recent post about taking movies with the iPhone 3GS , you probably noted that I talked about the lack of editing capabilities on the iPhone with the exception of trimming the beginning and ending of your videos. What if you want to edit your movies, add titles or effects, or combine a bunch of short iPhone video clips? Several of the comments left by TUAW readers asked the same question, and it’s so easy to do that I decided to whip up a quick tutorial showing how this works

iPhone for Newbies: Honey, I shrunk the manual

Filed under: iPhone , iPhone 101 Caveat Emptor: This is for newbies only. If you’ve been around, you probably don’t need this. When I bought my last Verizon phone, it came with about three quarters of a pound of paper housed in three manuals allowing me to find just about anything through the index

iPhone for Newbies: Ringtones, double contacts, periods, and AppleCare

Filed under: iPhone 101 I just bought my first iPhone, a 32 GB iPhone 3G S , and found that that there is an abundance of information out there covering just about every aspect of its use. As an iPhone virgin, most of this is new to me, but I’m sure it’s old hat to most. Apple, however, is set to sell over half a million new iPhones this weekend, so I’m sure there are a lot of virgins in my position.

O2 is a nightmare

The mobile phone company O2 in United Kingdom is not treating its best customers, the iPhone 3G already owners like it should. The cut the story short, if you want an iPhone 3GS, it’s around £440!!! If somebody from O2 is reading this, believe me, you will have a lot of angry customers who took the iPhone 3G 1 year ago for free after an upgrade from the iPhone 2G, and usually with an 18 months contract

Redeye Transforms iPhone into Remote Control

I had the benefit of beta testing a new iphone application called Redeye by ThinkFlood .  Essentially this application plus physical hub turns your iphone into a sophisticated remote control for all your appliances that use infrared, think: TV, DVD, Cable, Stereo, etc… After receiving the box in the mail it took only a matter of a few minutes, following the 5 point instructions, and I was ready to start using the remote.  The major drawback at this point is syncing it with your current remote control because of a lack of input codes.  However, this is only a beta test inconvenience because I believe in the live version they will have this sorted out. I inputted all the important keys from my two main remotes (tv and cable) and began testing.  I created a layout and was able to perform all the key functions of my remote controls with my iphone! Overall, even in beta this app is really slick.  After a few upgrades I can see this being the number one app for the iphone. Currently they are selling the beta units for $119.  If interested, which I highly recommend you do, check them out here

iPhone App: GPS Photorino

GPS Photorino is a great app that allows you to add a Polaroid border around any existing or new picture giving it a very nostalgic look. The most distinctive feature of the “GPS Photorino” is converting the longitude and latitude coordinates data searched by the iPhone into user friendly names and display them on the digital photo frame. In addition, the application shows up date & time automatically and allows a user to insert personalized notes on the photo frames
